We’ve known for some time now that actor Teddy Sears (Masters of Sex) would be joining the world of CW’s The Flash as the original Scarlet Speedster, Jay Garrick, from the parallel world of Earth-2. Although if he was Flash first before Barry Allen, how come his world isn’t Earth-1? Seems kind of shady if you ask me. Never even made sense in the comics. Moving on….
We got a small glimpse of his costume in a promotional image a few weeks back, which recreated the cover to the comic that showcased the very first meeting between the “Flashes of two worlds” in live-action. And now, Sears has posted a much better, more close-up look at his costume via an image he posted on his Instagram account, which you can see below:
I have to say, the 1940s Flash costume, which always looked a wee bit on the goofy side in the comics, what with the Mercury helmet and all, has translated pretty darn good into live action. As usual with these comic book adaptations, the bright red from the comics has been toned down to a more burgundy color, and the big yellow lightning bolt across his chest has been also toned down some, with just the outline of a lightning bolt now.
Still, the TV costume actually looks far more like the classic uniform the character wore for decades in the comics, versus the ‘New 52′ redesign the character was given a few years ago to give Jay a more modern update. You can see both the classic Jay Garrick comic book costume and the newer one in the pic below, and you can easily see how the series’ producers decided to go a little more old school. And I’m more than OK with that.
The Flash has its second season premiere on Tuesday, October 8 on the CW.
