Get a Fresh Look at SyFy’s New Space Drama, ASCENSION

For the last few years, Syfy’s drifted away from its namesake. While some of its series were top notch in their heyday, such as Warehouse 13 and Eureka, for the most part, the network’s been home to nothing but parody and B-level scripted content such as Sharknado. Even with the occasional gem of Face/Off, there hasn’t been much to celebrate from the NBC-owned station… but that appears to be changing.

With a new year comes a new mandate from the network to deliver on a return to hard science fiction, and the first series in that new push is the wildly insane-sounding “period drama,” Ascension, and with its premiere a short few weeks away, the network’s released a new behind-the-scenes look at its latest. Check it out:

For sure, what Ascension has going for it is originality. We definitely can’t say we’ve ever heard of the concept of a ’60s-launched space station that remains stuck in the decade as it drifts through space for over a half-century. However, while the premise does seem strong enough to draw us in, it’s going to be the personalities that need to keep us there… luckily, the character work we’re seeing in this latest featurette appears strong.

It’ll also be interesting to watch what happens on earth as some work to uncover the truth behind the interstellar ship, and with any luck, it will all culminate in an epic series we’ll be dying to see more of.

Ascension premieres Monday, December 15th at 9/8c on Syfy.

Looks great- but def misses the balance of what would be advanced but retro tech.It is so exposition heavy and the ham fisted dialogue like “they’re watching, they’re everywhere” Well- of course they are.it’s like someone wrote this after reading the Cliff notes on Lost.
