George Miller Talks MAD MAX Sequels, The Making of FURY ROAD, More

How long will it be before our world is shiny and chrome again? George Miller doesn’t know, but he says that lovely day is coming eventually.

Deadline has an interview with Miller, where the director touched upon a number of topics, including the making of Fury Road, the future of the franchise, reaction to the film, and even some deep thoughts about the role of superhero films in society.

As we’ve reported before, Miller has scripts for future Mad Max movies that came about during the long process of making Fury Road, including one that has been referred to as “Wasteland,” though he says it “probably won’t be called” that. Too bad, that’s a pretty perfect title for a Mad Max movie. He still doesn’t know when any sequels would be made, but he is “definitely in discussion about making more of these,” and that “we’ll definitely see more of Tom [Hardy].”

The 70-year-old Oscar winner (Happy Feet, yeah I swear), discussed the development and genesis of Fury Road’s lead female warrior, Imperator Furiosa, as well the decision to mainly forego special effects while shooting in the desert of Namibia. He said the one stunt he didn’t think they could pull off was the one involving the “pole catchers,” aka the guys that were swinging back and forth above the moving cars.

As to questions about whether or not the original Max, Mel Gibson, could appear in a future film, Miller says that is unlikely, and for a very practical reason. “It would pull audiences out of the movie for a bit, and we worked so hard to keep people immersed in the movie as much as possible,” he said, comparing it to Roger Moore appearing in a Daniel Craig James Bond film. “It would be fun, but it would also pull you out of the experience of the movie.”

Make sure you head over to read the entire interview, because there is a lot of great stuff. Then try to figure out a way to find meaning in life until the next Mad Max movie comes out.
