Gaming Daily: SUPER SMASH BROS. Rumored to Be NX Launch Title

With the Neil Degrasse Tyson/B.O.B and Kanye/Wiz Khalifa twitter beefs, Barbie’s redesign, and the adorable Kristen Bell/Dax Shepard music video, the internet’s been a busy place this week. Unfortunately, the same can’t really be said for the gaming world. Just in case you were busy keeping up with the previously mentioned (obviously hard-hitting) news, and missed any of the game updates that were announced, we’ve got you covered. In today’s Gaming Daily, Super Smash Bros. might be an NX launch title, Insomniac Games unveiled Song of the Deep, Bungie has a new CEO and promised more Destiny, and Bandai Namco released new Dark Souls III screenshots.

Super Smash Bros. might be a launch title for NX, Bandai Namco supposedly working on several games.

The NX is still, for the most part shrouded in mystery. Because of that, there have been a ton of rumors floating around the web. Though most of them will probably end up being false, there’s one that’s been making the rounds today that sounds pretty plausible. According to a couple of recent tweets by Dr. Serkan Toto, it sounds like Nintendo is planning on making Super Smash Bros. an NX launch title. He also notes that Bandai Namco is working on several titles for it.

The reason his remarks hold so much weight is that Dr. Toto–who is CEO of Tokyo-based consultancy company Kantan Games–has provided detailed and accurate analysis of the Japanese market in the past. When asked about the identity of his source, he replied “Can’t say (sorry), but the source situation is very solid. Otherwise I wouldn’t have tweeted.”

Though there is no indication what Namco is actually working on, it wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility. They’ve worked closely with Nintendo in the past. As for whether the Smash Bros. title is a re-release of the Wii U version, or a new one all together, he later elaborated: “To follow up on my last tweet: I haven’t heard if it’s a completely new (numbered) Smash Bros or not. Otherwise, source situation is solid.”

The general assumption is that it will be a re-release, or a GOTY sort of release including all of the DLC. Re-releasing a title as a launch on a brand new console wouldn’t be unheard of for the Japanese Giant.  They did something similar with Twilight Princess when the Wii launched. If you’ve been keeping up with our NX coverage, you’ll know we’ve previously speculated that The new Legend of Zelda title would likely appear on both the Wii U, and would probably be one of the NX launch titles. Though likely, this will remain a rumor until Nintendo confirms it.

Alongside the announcement, they also dropped the gorgeous trailer above, and explained a bit about the Metroidvania-style title. Bungie gets new CEO, promises more Destiny

Speaking of announcements, Bungie recently made an interesting one. The company’s CEO Harold Ryan–who’s been with Bungie for over 15 years–has been replaced by former COO Pete Parsons. Without an explanation for the change, and with the fans’ loss of interest in Destiny, the news is a bit worrying. The company seems receptive to that, and has already commented on the matter.

Parsons stated, “To the players of Destiny, I want you to know that my number one priority, and Bungie’s, is and always has been to deliver great games that we can all share together.”

“I believe that Destiny is a one-of-a-kind experience.” He continued. “I also believe you have yet to see our studio’s best work. My new role here at the studio will be entirely focused on fulfilling that promise.”

It will be interesting to see how this pans out.

Bandai Namco releases new Dark Souls 3 screenshots

With February right around the corner, it means we’re one month closer to Dark Souls III‘s April 12 release date. If you read our hands-on preview of the title back in August, or have seen any of our Bloodborne content, you know how pumped we are for FromSoftware’s upcoming title. From what we’ve seen, the game is shaping up nicely. To whet our appetites even more, Bandai Namco has released some new screenshots.

The screenshot above, for instance, features a new boss called the Iudex Gundyr. He is shown wielding a spear-like weapon, and has a frightening black mass extending from his body. The baddie will reportedly be encountered after the player reawakens at the Untended Graves as an “Unkindled”.

The Firelink Shrine is also shown off, which is interesting, especially for those familiar with the first game.

The description reads as follows:

“As they begin the game, players will find themselves revived in the Untended Graves as an “Unkindled” and will have to face the mighty Iudex Gundyr as a test to prove their worth before heading into Firelink Shrine.

In the shrine they will find a Fire Keeper tending to a bonfire who will serve players on their long and arduous journey. Players will find other characters inhabiting the shrine including Hawkwood, an Unkindled and fugitive from Farron’s Undead Legion, along with a peculiar looking man sitting on one of the thrones in the shrine calling himself Ludleth of Courland and a Lord of Cinder

From Firelink Shrine players will begin a dark and brooding fantasy adventure across the vast and twisted world of Dark Souls III.”

Yep, consider us excited. Very excited. Praise the sun!
