Gaming Daily: More PS4 Remasters are Likely According to Sony

There are two days left of Gamescom, but now that most of the big announcements are out of the way, we have some down time to sit and take it all in before PAX Prime hits at the end of the month. We’ve seen new footage from Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate, Destiny: The Taken King, Scalebound and even gave you our thoughts on our experience going hands on with Dark Souls III. Since this week was a lot to take in, we’re here, as always, to help you wind down for the weekend by keeping you informed and up to date on what you missed.

In today’s Gaming Daily: Sony hints at more PS4 remasters, Super Meat Boy 2 might happen, FromSoftware’s Hidetaka Miyazaki intends to launch “several new projects”, there’s going to be a VR game based on John Wick, and actors from LOTR, The Wire, X-Men and Game of Thrones make up Quantum Break’s cast.

The Uncharted Collection

According to Sony, more PS4 remasters are likely.

I can’t honestly say that I’m surprised by this, but it is disappointing when you realize we’ve been swimming in remasters since the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One released. I’ll admit, re-releases are a normal part of transitioning between consoles, but at what point will enough be enough? Though we may have reached that point and are begging for new games, it seems PlayStation hasn’t had their fill yet.

“We know that there are lots of PS4 owners that have either never played games before or used to have an Xbox or a Nintendo who have never had the chance to play something like the Uncharted trilogy,” stated SCEE President Jim Ryan during Gamescom. “But it has to be a great game if we’re going to go to the trouble of re-mastering. I can’t talk specifically, but I think that it’s very likely that there’ll be more.”

We’ve already had re-masters of God of War 3, The Last of Us, and are looking forward to the official release of Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection this fall, but it’s hard to think of a game that would be both “great” and beneficial enough to upgrade. What do you think? What game (if any) would you want remastered for the PS4?

John Wick Q A

Lionsgate is teaming up with Starbreeze Studios on a John Wick VR game.

John Wick, the Keanu Reeves action film that took the world by storm last year, was not only successful enough to garner a sequel, but will also be getting its own VR video game. This surprising news was announced by Lionsgate and Payday developer Starbreeze Studios earlier today. According to the press release, the game will be a standalone first-person shooter based on the characters and world from the film. A demo will be available alongside the HTC Vive and will be launched sometime next year.

Dark Souls III

FromSoftware President Hidetaka Miyazaki says the developer has plans for “several new projects”

Hidetaka Miyazaki–famed Game Director and President of Dark Souls developer FromSoftware–has reiterated several times since E3 that Dark Souls III isn’t the end of the road for a franchise, but more of a “turning point.” While this could mean that the same story might be taken in a new direction, many are curious whether the creative team has plans to tackle other genres.

When the folks at Gamespot asked Miyazaki-san whether he had plans to explore the sci-fi or mech genres, he revealed that he “definitely wants to bring the Miyazaki Touch” to them.

While he doesn’t elaborate much on his plans to “launch several new projects” he admits, “I do want to work on something new,” he added. “I’m pleased to hear people are interested in seeing that.”

Though I wouldn’t object to Dark Souls continuing forever (and ever), it would be cool to see the team try something new.

Quantum Break gets star-studded cast.

After skipping E3 this year, Alan Wake developer Remedy Entertainment hit Gamescom this week to both reveal Quantum Break’s launch date, and announce the game’s star-studded cast. Shawn Ashmore (X-Men), Dominic Monaghan (LOTR, LOST), Aiden Gillen (Game of Thrones) and Lance Reddick (The Wire) will be lending their acting chops to the project. Seeing as a live-action television show is to be thrown into the mix, we have high hopes for Quantum Break.

Super Meat Boy

Super Meat Boy could possibly get a sequel.

Although they’ve previously said it would never happen, Edmund McMillen and Tommy Refenes of Team Meat revealed via an interview with Gamespot that their hit game Super Meat Boy could get a sequel after all.

On working on their upcoming mobile title Super Meat Boy Forever, they stated, “An interesting thing happened in the midst of chaos,” McMillen says. “We were like ‘How can we finish [Super Meat Boy Forever]? We have to finish this, and I don’t know what I’m doing.’ That was around the time we realized we could release Meat Boy on other platforms, too. So it was kind of like this change of perspective in a way. What we talked about was possibly working on a sequel, and it’s something that I like a lot. There were aspects of Forever that were moves that Meat Boy did…that we were prototyping that felt like they could be better used in a sequel. The future of Meat Boy is definitely up in the air, but a sequel is something that I wouldn’t be opposed to doing even though we both said that we wouldn’t do it.”

While of course this isn’t a confirmation that it’s going to happen, they insist that they wouldn’t be mentioning it if they didn’t feel like it was realistic enough. When asked why they weren’t interested in working on the game back in 2010 when the first game came out, McMillen explained, “We purposefully avoided working on another Meat Boy because we didn’t want to jump back into it.” Referenes added, “Yeah, because it’s hard. You want some ginger in between your sushis.”
