Gaming Daily: MINECRAFT Convention Heading To London in 2015

Welcome back to your friendly nerd haven, ladies and gents! Did you enjoy the Super Bowl? What about the commercials or Katy Perry’s insane half-time performance. The big game was certainly entertaining from the kick-off all the way to the final snap. Speaking of “kicking off,” we’re kicking this week of Gaming Daily off with some very good Minecraft news, a crazy development with the studio formerly known as Sony Online Entertainment (I know, right), and a rumor that may shake up the resolution game for next-gen home consoles. Hop on down and get started!

Minecon returns, heads for London

Minecraft fans– especially those based in the London area– have a very legitimate reason to urinate their undergarments in excitement this evening. Minecon is returning this year, and will be happening at the ExCeL London Exhibition and Conference Centre from July 4 through July 7. And just like that, Independence Day became a lot more interesting.

The convention was cancelled for the first time since its 2010 launch last year, but one Telltale game, a Microsoft deal, and some movie talks later, the event will return and is projected to be the biggest one yet. Attendees will get to meet some of the most dedicated Minecraft fans breathing in the community, as well as receive a slew of exclusive in-game and physical Minecraft collectibles and items.

Mojang is currently doing their part to get hotel discounts together for attendees, of which they plan to host 10,000. Sounds like a hell of a party! Tickets will go on sale this month through Mojang’s Minecon page, so keep this link bookmarked if you plan on making the trip out to the show.

Sony Online Entertainment sold, multi-platform content on the way.

The studio behind Everquest, Planetside II, DC Universe Online and H1Z1 has been sold by Sony to the investment establishment Columbus Nova. The game studio will now operate independently under the new moniker Daybreak Game Company.

“This means that effective immediately SOE will operate as an independent game development studio where we will continue to focus on creating exceptional online games for players around the world, and now as a multiplatform gaming company,” the studio announced.

Company president John Smedley has already made his aspirations to go multiplatform quite apparent on social media:

The studio will continue to work on all of the games that were currently under development, and since Sony does not own the licensing to any of the IPs, you can definitely expect to see them appear on other platforms. Being independent will also allow the studio to explore different business models, outside of the current free-to-play model that many of the SOE games have donned over the years. Well played, Sony Enter… err.. Daybreak Game Company.

I’m going to have to get use to this name change stuff.

Rumor: PS4 and Xbox One to come in 4K-capable versions this fall.

Believe it or not, we’re less than five months away from E3 2015, which means the huge industry leaks and rumors are getting ready to start surfacing. The word on the streets today: the PS4 and the Xbox One will be receiving shiny new 4K-capable versions sometime this fall, as reported by Forbes. Given that Netflix boasted 4K movies during CES, it isn’t far-fetched to assume that they’d know about the future of the 4K movement from a hardware standpoint.

If this does come to fruition, you have to wonder what type of hardware adjustments that Sony and Microsoft will bring to the table. There’s also the question of whether or not we’re ready for the bandwidth heavy task of streaming 4K to our homes. I can hear my modem complaining already. I’m only mildly excited about 4K quite thus far (thanks to Dragon Age: Inquisition), but I’m sure there’s a heap of gamers who are salivating over these possibilities. Of course, they could all just play their games in 4K on PC, albeit after dropping a nice chunk of change on building a 4K-capable rig. See you soon, future.
