GAME OF THRONES Season 5 Sees New Directors Added to the Fold

There’s a heck of a lot of new coming to Game of Thrones next season — new characters, new settings, new book deviations aplenty. Also new? All of their directors next season save one.

That one is the man behind “The Rains of Castamere” from season three, otherwise/better known as the one with The Red Wedding in it, David Nutter. Nutter, who just so happens to be the owner of the best surname this world has ever seen (seriously we wish our last name was Nutter), will tackle the last two episodes of the season. No small feat and surely a rousing vote of confidence for the director’s abilities.

Joining him in some of the slots left open by Alex Graves and the showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff moving away from the director’s chair this season are the previously reported on Michael Slovis, as well as three other men who are highly experienced in the Highly Good And Dramatic Prestige Television world: Mark Mylod, Jeremy Podeswa, and Miguel Sapochnik. Everyone will direct two episodes a piece.

Noticeably absent from the list is one of our favorite directors of the series — and its only female director cough cough — is Michelle MacLaren, who directed “First of His Name,” “Oathkeeper, “Second Sons,” and “The Bear and the Maiden Fair.” She’s apparently working on AMC’s Better Call Saul, though, so hopefully that’s their excuse for omitting her from season five.

The complete breakdown — including the directors’ most noteworthy credits — is below:

Episodes 501, 502: Michael Slovis (Breaking Bad, Law & Order: SVU)
Episodes 503, 504: Mark Mylod (Shameless, Entourage)
Episodes 505, 506: Jeremy Podeswa (Boardwalk Empire, The Tudors)
Episodes 507, 508: Miguel Sapochnik (House, Fringe)
Episodes 509, 510: David Nutter

What do you think of the choices? Have some other directors you’d like to see added to the GoT roster someday? Leave your thoughts in the comments!

  1. Great directors from other amazing shows? Can’t wait.

It is a mistake to replace Graves.

  3. Jake says:

No Neil Marshall? That’s honestly very upsetting. His episodes, Blackwater and The Watchers on the Wall are the most pivotal episodes in their respective seasons. Not to mention that they feature probably the best action sequences of the whole series.
