GAME OF THRONES Gets a Swingin’ 60s, Saul Bass Style Update

Now here’s something we certainly don’t hate: a German Game of Thrones fan has reimagined the opening title sequence with wickedly sixties aplomb and the results are a Saul Bass-ified trip into another time. And if it hasn’t been made clear already, we really, really dig it, ya dig?

Designer Milan Vuckovic is the mastermind behind this current video sensation sweeping the Westerosi nation, with plenty of bold graphics and seriously swinging music to bring the whole thing to life. It’s too bad Saul Bass has passed because we think he’d be quite tickled at the homage using one of the biggest television series of late.

Maybe you’re one of those people that doesn’t know this Saul Bass character. (Which is totally OK! Just because you’re on the Internet doesn’t mean you’re supposed to know all of the things.) The Academy Award-winning filmmaker was also a prolific graphic designer, having worked on a bevy of cinematic title sequences, posters, and corporate logos. So even if you don’t know his name, you very likely have seen his work. He’s the creative force behind the title sequences of such iconic films as Psycho, the original Ocean’s Eleven, and North by Northwest — just to name a very few. To say nothing of his work crafting Continental Airlines’ 1968 jet stream logo, United Airlines’ 1974 tulip one, and AT&T’s globe logo in 1983. Even a cursory glance at his Wikipedia page is likely to amaze you.

So — who else/in what other style would you like to see tackle the GoT opening credits? Let us know in the comments.

I’d like to see a version done in the style of Thunderbirds from the 60s, including marionettes, explosions and Videcolor.

  2. Wes says:

I think it would be cool to see it done in the style of the old Rankin/Bass cartoons like the Hobbit/Return of the King/Flight of Dragons.
