How Many Dragons Would it Take to Melt GAME OF THRONES’ Wall?

Even if you don’t have a crazy theory about mer-men or have very strong opinions about who should die this season, you know HBO’s Game of Thrones is that show with all the dragons and ice in it. It’s ultimately going to be a showdown between these two fundamental forces, but which would win, scientifically speaking? How many dragon would it take to melt The Wall?

In my latest Because Science, I’m calculating just how much ice is in the famous White Walker-blocker, and how much fire is in a dragon. We know quite a bit about how much energy it takes to melt ice and how much heat energy comes from combusting fuel, so the math should be able to tell us how many dragons Daenerys would have to summon. Spoiler alert: it’s way more than three.

Water and ice can absorb gargantuan amounts of energy (relatively speaking) before increasing in temperature, which means the dragons have their work cut out for them. Not only that, but one dragon can’t contain more than a few gallons of burn-juice.

What’s the final number? You’ll have to watch my latest episode above to find out!
