Futurama is Back (as a Mobile Puzzle Game)

Futurama is back from the dead… sort of. We wish we could report that the show is returning to TV or there’s a movie on the way or something, but instead, the franchise is being resurrected as a mobile puzzle game called FUTURAMA: Game of Drones.

According to developer Wooga, the game “takes players on a journey with the Planet Express crew as they fight a desperately imbalanced trade war against longtime shipping rival MomCo. While delivering dangerous cargo to hazardous locations under ill-advised circumstances, players connect groups of delivery drones to solve an array of fiendish puzzles as they venture into iconic environments from the FUTURAMA universe.”

Some impressive names are going to be working on the title: Dave Grossman, who wrote point-and-click classic The Secret of Monkey Island, is designing the game, and former Futurama producer Patric Verrone is also involved.

While it would be nice to have Bender, Fry, and the rest of the Planet express crew embark on new televised adventures, at least we’re getting some new taste of the Futurama universe. Maybe there will be new in-game voice work, or if we’re super fortunate, perhaps even a cut-scene or two.

In a perfect world, Release the Drones would be the first step of a revival campaign for the show. Wouldn’t Futurama be a fine addition to the Netflix family? Then again, if that didn’t pan out, our hearts may not be able to handle seeing the show cancelled for a third time. But as Alfred, Lord Tennyson said, “‘Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.”
