Funko Unveils Special Edition Batman Figures

Frank Miller’s seminal graphic novel The Dark Knight Returnsabout an aging Bruce Wayne coming out of retirement to return to the cape and cowl of Batman after ten years away–changed how the character was perceived by many, and took Batman to all-new heights of popularity. In this story, he fought not only mutant gangs in Gotham, but took on The Joker one last time, and had an ultimate showdown with Superman. The coolest addition was that his newest Robin was a girl, a spunky young teenager named Carrie Kelley.

If it wasn’t for the massive popularity of this comic, it’s doubtful the original Tim Burton Batman film would have ever been made, much less the more recent Christopher Nolan directed trilogy, which took many elements from Miller’s graphic novel–not the least of which was the name The Dark Knight. And that part where Batman fights Superman while wearing a suit of armor in Batman v Superman? Yup, that entire scene was lifted directly from Frank Miller’s work.

Now as part of a celebration of thirty years of The Dark Knight Returns, Funko has announced via Comic Book, that the latest wave of POP! figures will be based on characters from that celebrated graphic novel. Included among them are an armored Batman showing a cowled caped crusader holding a weapon, as well as an unmasked armored Batman. The other two Batman figures are a blue outfitted one (with yellow oval around the bat-symbol) and a black outfitted Batman. There’s aslo a white suited knife holding Joker, and a Carrie Kelley version of Robin, for which we only have a drawn image so far.
