French Artist Adds Some Character to Driftwood with These Awesome Creations

Living in Seattle, I venture down to the bay occasionally and walk along the pier (I say occasionally because it can turn into a tourist magnet REAL quick). As I look across the water at the loading docks (imagine EVERY ending to an action movie and you can picture them in your head), I always notice driftwood floating in the water. To me, it’s just that, driftwood. To French artist Anna Foucher, it’s much more.

She has taken pieces of driftwood found on walks and trips and created character art with them. According to her website, “More that just a piece of tree, driftwood, this lost wood, worn by water is the result of nature; he has a story to tell…” (translated from French via Google Translate)

And what stories she has created. As you can see from the gallery below, Foucher has a knack for creating something out of nothing. Her “Seaside”-themed creations include a ship’s captain, a longshoreman, and a sailor and his wife.

She then decided to out do herself go the pop culture route, making driftwood creations of Batman and Robin, the Joker, and the Dark Lord of the Sith himself, Darth Vader.

I like how she posts before and after pictures, walking you through the driftwood’s journey from oceanic junk to Dark Knight Detective.

You can check out Foucher’s website here.

So what say you? Which one was your favorite? If you had the chance, what requests would you make? Let me know on Twitter or in the comments below.
