Fox is in Talks For an X-FILES Mini-Series; Considering More 24 and PRISON BREAK

After yesterday’s bombshell that NBC had cast Chuck’s Zachary Levi in a leading role for their upcoming revival of Heroes, Fox realized it had to return fire in a major way so as not to be outdone by one of its competitors… so of course they used The X-Files to do it.

In a surprising twist on this year’s Winter TCA presentation, the studio did confirm talks are currently underway for a mini-series continuation of the Chris Carter series. However that’s where the news ends as the network did not state how many episodes were being considered, who would be returning if the event-series did in fact take place or what left over stories it would tackle.

Given the last movie sequel from 2008 didn’t address the series’ hanging thread of the apocalypse taking place, it seems a mini-series revival would be a good place to finally wrap things up the way they should have been back in 2002. As of now, all we can do is speculate – but hey, at least we can listen to Gillian Anderson and Chris Hardwick get the #XFiles2015 hashtag started on the Nerdist podcast!

However, The X-Files isn’t all Fox is considering putting back in play as at the presentation it was also stated the network is thinking about more episodes of 24 and, believe it or not, Prison Break.

Concerning 24, it was made clear there’s nothing more than ideas being thrown around at the moment, one of which would see the series continue without Kiefer Sutherland’s famed Jack Bauer (which would coincide with the rumor of Yvonne Strahovski’s Kate Morgan being groomed to take over the leading role of the show should Sutherland depart). In addition, it would work plot wise as, at least for an initial run, Jack is currently locked up with the Russians as per the end of 24: Live Another Day made clear.

As for Prison Break, this one throws us. Not so much because it’s a bad show – it’s actually a great show – but because unlike The X-Files and 24, there are no hanging threads. Everything was wrapped up rather cleanly at the end of the series and then even more so in the direct-to-video one off, Prison Break: The Final Break… and then even more so again when the character of T-Bag was revived for a one-episode arc on A&E’s Breakout Kings. So while we’ll welcome more Prison Break, it does seem rather unnecessary.

Overall, a big news day for Fox and fans of their past slate of great TV… oh, and Gotham was renewed for Season Two as well. You’re welcome.

Are you up for more X-Files? We know we are! Let us know in the comments below.

Made my day to hear X files may come back!  Loved that series.  Seams like every time I really enjoy a series they get rid of it, so I haven’t really watched any series since X-Files until the Game of Thrones.  Can hardly wait to see all of the characters and the series again!!!

  2. ben says:

He’ll yes I’m up for more x-files flat out best show I have ever watched. I loved it and always wanted to find out if aliens really did invade. I been hoping for a 3rd movie for it but a mini series or full series would be better

  3. b1ue says:

  5. boB says:

I heard Michael Scofield continued with his lawbreaking ways and showed up in Central City as a nemesis of The Flash.

  6. Autumn says:

I’m an x file virgin. Just after I listened to the Gilian podcast I started watching the series on Netflix. So here goes nothing. Maybe I’ll be done by the time the reboot come out.

  7. Amelia says:

I got the feeling Fox was so on board with the return of X-Files when Gillian mentioned something abou it  in the podcast and then the campaing started. Glad I was right 🙂

  8. Jo says:

Yes. More X-Files all the time.

  9. prison break is trash… season 3 and 4 were awfull..completely over the top…everything that could go wrong went wrong…back up plan for the back up plan for the back up pan and the back up plan after that…

    YES!!!!!!

  16. Mrs. Mulder says:

    YES. YES. YESSS!

  17. Melvin says:

I think the best way to do X-Files now, even with Gillian and David on-board, is a complete restart. That would more than help get out from beneath the byzantine mythology and let them tell new stories in a contemporary way, rather than be beholden to the show’s own legacy.

  18. renee says:

Prison Break unnecessary?  Clearly, the writer is delusional!  Prison Break was a fabulous show, and I would love to see what’s going on now with the, “Fox River 8”.  Bummer about Scoffield though.

  19. Paul says:

Well, in classic Fox style, they will bring back the X-files for 2-3 episodes, then cancel it for being a damn good sci-fy show.

  20. Kevin Hintzman says:

Zachary Levi needs to be in a Star Trek TV series. End of story. Heros is awful. NBC needs to flush it away for good.

  21. Vaz says:

YES!!! We are ready for more X-Files!! Just got my husband into it we are watching the whole thing from the beginning! This is perfect!!

  22. Kyle says:

Chris and Gillian did this! It all started in the podcast!
