Fly The Droid-Friendly Skies in a New R2-D2 Airplane

It’s the ship that made the Kessel Run in less than twelve parsecs. No, not the Millennium Falcon, the new R2-D2 Dreamliner Aircraft! At Star Wars Celebration, All Nippon Airways unveiled their plans for the first and only passenger aircraft to feature a Star Wars character. Turns out Artoo doesn’t just make a great nav computer for a starfighter but makes for a charming way to travel internationally as well.

ANA’s newest aircraft the 787-9 Dreamliner, is part of a five-year deal with The Walt Disney Company (Japan) Ltd in an effort to enhance ANA’s international presence. The new planes are emblazoned with Artoo’s iconic look that seamlessly combines with ANA’s blue logo.

“…many people associate R2-D2 with competent and reliable service-also hallmarks of ANA’s 5-star service,” a press release from ANA stated. Well played. If Artoo can find his way out of a Dagobah swamp, he’ll find his way around international routes, no problem.

One can only hope that these Star Wars planes are tricked out like the Hello Kitty planes that launched last year, with themed pillows, meals and, other amenities. Yes, I’m saying I’d like to see R2-D2 toilet paper in an airplane toilet.

The custom R2-D2 planes will start hitting the skies on ANA international flights later this year just in time for the release of The Force Awakens.
