First DOCTOR STRANGE Poster Shows a Pensive Cumberbatch

By the hoary hosts of Hoggoth! In advance of the first Doctor Strange trailer airing Tuesday night on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Marvel has released a new poster for the forthcoming Benedict Cumberbatch-starring superhero film. So fix your Eye of Agamotto on the first full poster in all of its magical majesty.

While the light streaming through that intricate window might first evoke something like Hugo, it may well be a scene of Doctor Strange standing inside the Sanctum Sanctorum, his magical townhouse in New York City’s Greenwich Village that serves as his base of operations, his cloak of levitation billowing behind him. However, something tells me that there’s a lot more going on in this poster than meets the eye. Speaking of eyes, it seems like the good Doctor may, in fact, be inside the Eye of Agamotto, the name of the mystical amulet which he wears around his neck. Compare the design on the amulet around Strange’s neck in the photo below…

Perhaps he is astrally projecting himself inside the amulet to learn more of its secrets. Or maybe I haven’t had enough coffee this morning and this is, in fact, just the window of the Sanctum Sanctorum and Doctor Strange just has a very specific design aesthetic that he likes.

Currently little else is known about the movie, apart from the fact that Chiwetel Ejifor is playing Baron Mordo, Tilda Swinton is playing the Ancient One, and Mads Mikkelsen is playing an as-yet unrevealed villain. Hopefully that will change after tonight’s trailer premiere.

Here’s the official Doctor Strange synopsis:

Doctor Strange follows the story of neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a horrific car accident, discovers the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions.”

Stay tuned tomorrow on Nerdist.com for a full breakdown of this evening’s trailer, which airs on Jimmy Kimmel Live at 11:35PM ET, as well as a primer on everything you need to know about Doctor Strange before seeing the movie.
