The Matrix definitely needed more fire breathing. Philadelphia based Cinematographer Mitch Martinez has uploaded a video of a man breathing fire, caught in the magic of bullet time.
For those who are unfamiliar, “bullet time” is when a moving camera creates the effect of extremely slowed time. This process was pioneered decades ago, and widely popularized in that famous scene in The Matrix where Neo (Keanu Reeves) dodges bullets (woah). Since then, it has regularly been used in film production, from Superman Returns to Fight Club, Pulp Fiction, Fargo and more.
This video was an experimental shoot for Martinez’s show reel, shot on RED Epic cameras. All imagery in this video was created in-camera. Take a look at the whole thing, it’s breathtaking.
Martinez breaks down the set-up:
48 DSLR camera array + RED Epic (120fps) and GH4 (96 fps). There is no CGI Animation or VFX.
