Finding Gems in the Coachella Lineup: The Yearly Meltdown

Every year around this time indie kids have mini brain aneurysms over the Coachella lineup release. This year is no different. An emotional cornucopia of glee, disappointment, and the inevitable, “Wait, who?” blasts the Internet faster than you can say Bombay Bicycle Club.

FRIDAY: We’ve got OutKast! Cool!

SATURDAY: There’s Muse! Oh. All right, I guess.

SUNDAY: Arcade Fire!!! Well… That was expected.

It’s the time of year we can all speculate whether or not a Casper The Friendly Ghost hologram will perform with Lana Del Rey or if you’re going to finally buy that Winnebago you’ve had your eye on. Who cares if it was probably a meth lab? No matter what, the great thing about Coachella 2014 is the deep cuts. It’s always the little guys who sneak in the bottom, the ones you need to squint to read even if you have your night driving glasses on. Like….

Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue

Though you probably didn’t venture into the desert to listen to Jazz, these guys are well worth the trip. It’s not even that free-form Jazz you need to be over 60 to appreciate. It’s get out of bed and have a great day Jazz; a combination of funk and rap and party.

Future Islands

These synthpop boys have been around for a while but it’s been a few years since they’ve put a new album out. Good thing that won’t be the case for long, as their new album, Singles, will be out on March 24th. Their 2011 hit “Balance” is worth seeing live, so we can only hope the rest of their set will live up to the hype.

Anna Lunoe

Anna Lunoe was born to play Coachella. She’s the female, upbeat version of Poolside, who will also be playing on Sunday of the festival. The electropop mixes paired with her vocals are what I would want to listen to at my yacht party if I had a yacht.

Galantis

This one is exciting. Galantis is made up of Christian Karlsson from Miike Snow and Linus Eklow, a/k/a Style Of Eye. They’ve only released one song to the public, it’s called “Smile,” and it has been stuck in my head for about a week. Me want more.

Tom Odell

People give James Blunt a hard time for “You’re Beautiful” but when push comes to shove, he’s pretty okay. So if you took James Blunt’s music and added the style and panache of Coachella sensation James Blake you’d get Tom Odell. It’s not anything crazy — most likely a morning show, but definitely worth jotting down.

Coachella 2014 tickets went on sale today (January 10th). The festival takes place April 11th-13th and again on the 18th-20th.

And in my confusion… I forgot to second Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue! I saw them once opening for Dr. John in New Orleans after a friend’s uncle bought us tickets, insisting we needed a true New Orleans experience. It was awesome!

    Wait… Coachella is so popular they’re just… doing it twice? Like… they’re, but… uhh… whaaa?

I highly recommend Caravan Palace. I saw them last year and they are amazing live.
