Feed Your Need for Zombies with THE WALKING DEAD: ASSAULT

Let’s face it – the wait until The Walking Dead‘s triumphant return on October 13th is more excruciating than watching Andrea struggle to pick something up with her opposable thumbfeet. We’ve told you time and time again how much we dig Telltale’s The Walking Dead: Season One, but sometimes you want something a little bit more action-intensive and less heart-wrenching while you’re on the go. Enter the world of The Walking Dead: Asssault, an iOS and Android game that gives you a bird’s-eye view of all the apocalyptic action for which you’ve come to know and love Robert Kirkman’s weird, little universe.

Players take control of a party of up to four characters from a tactical top-down perspective and navigate them through 11 missions straight from the comic book’s first few issues, covering the time that Rick wakes up in the hospital through his time at the makeshift countryside camp. Movement is easy to learn and, well, easy to master; pick-up-and-playability was clearly on the forefront of the design team’s minds. Each character has an attack radius based on what weapon they’re holding — e.g. Shane’s shotgun is ideal for short range, whereas Andrea’s rifle can pick off those pesky walkers from a distance. Each character also has a passive, party-wide ability that benefits your whole crew, so you gaming sabermetricians out there will have plenty of fun trying to min/max and come up with the best possible party combinations.

While it’s not perfect, it’s miles above the dead on arrival The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct, so if you’re looking for a fun, addictive way to send biters back to hell with a slew of extras for diehard fans of the franchise, then The Walking Dead: Assault is well worth your time. Besides, what else were you going to do while waiting in line at the grocery store? Make uncomfortable eye contact with the dude buying his bodyweight in toilet paper? Pretend like you care who wore it better?

We know the game has been out for a minute, but if you’re anything like me, it might have eluded your ever watchful eye. Fortunately, the fine folks at Skybound Entertainment and Google Play understand your pain, and as part of Google Play’s massive Indie Game Sale, which runs through September 3rd, Android users can snag The Walking Dead: Asssault for just $1.49, which is like a million bucks in the post-apocalypse but is way more of a steal in the here and now.

Some of you Android users out there felt our Top 10 Gaming Apps gave you the short shrift, so now’s your chance to put your money where your flesh-hungry mouths are; it’s on iOS as well, but you guys still have to pay full price. So, go ahead and join the survival horror squad-based fun and play as your favorite characters from the comics and the TV show and before you know it, you’ll have missed 17 calls from work and 35 text messages from your friends and family; you’ll be just in time for the season 4 premiere and you’ll finally know whether or not Michonne is gonna be a-okay.
