Fantastic Fest: The Fantastic Debates Pit Keanu Reeves Against Tim League

Fantastic Fest is currently underway in Austin, Texas and this past Saturday night, it hosted its most popular event, The Fantastic Debates. The debates are a chance for cinephiles and movie nerds to argue, in a gentlemanly fashion, hard-hitting questions like: Is Sylvester Stallone America’s greatest action star? Does 28 Days Later truly qualify as a zombie film? Have good-looking, well adjusted people ruined nerd culture? Oh, and then, after they debate, they throw it out the window and beat the crap out of each other in the ring.
The most important question about which we needed the truth was whether or not Tai Chi could be anything other than an exercise for the elderly. Fantastic Fest and Alamo Drafthouse founder Tim League took the position that Tae Kwon Do was the superior form, but ready to step up and defend Tai Chi was the director of Man of Tai Chi himself, Keanu Reeves. Reeves, however would not be participating in the fisticuffs portion of the program, but instead Tiger Hu Chen would be stepping into the ring to show League what Reeves would call “a hard lesson.”

To fall even further down the rabbit hole of meta-moments in the evening, Bill and Ted were reunited, as Alex Winter was on hand at the festival for his new film Grand Piano with Elijah Wood. Alex served as Tim League’s trainer, while Keanu stayed in Tiger’s corner, leaving us to wonder if the new Bill and Ted film might be Bill Vs. Ted. Unfortunately not featured in the video was the great moment of Keanu Reeves closing his opening argument with “San Dimas High School Football rules!”

Watch the videos to see just how outlandish and fun the Fantastic Debates were:
