FANTASTIC FEST Mayhem, Genre Films, and THE HANDMAIDEN with Park Chan-Wook

The most harrowing cases of FOMO on medical record have accompanied avowed movie geeks’ dread over missing out on the genre glory that is Fantastic Fest. Unfortunately, many of us couldn’t make it to this year’s festival—held as per tradition in the hub of all that is weird: Austin, Texas—but living vicariously through those who were in attendance isn’t out of the question! The below video allows you to follow our own Clarke Wolfe’s rounds through the first day of Fantastic Fest, which she spent interviewing the likes of festival figures Tim League and Zack Carlson, exploring the Indian influence over this year’s slate of films, chatting The Handmaiden with director Park Chan-Wook, petting the odd iguana, and simply reveling in the great creative mayhem that is the double-F.

We don’t begrudge you any sour grapes over not having made it down to the Lone Star State for the festival this year, but hopefully our recap videos will help brighten your spirits by giving you a good idea of what to look out for down the pike. Kick The Handmaiden up to the top of your list—as Clarke says in the video, it was funny, sexual, dark, and, above all, a true love story—as it hits select theaters October 21. And keep an eye out for the rest of our Fantastic Fest recap videos; we’ll be going through each day of the festival, keeping you up to date on all the best horror, sci-fi, fantasy, and all-purpose weirdness to keep an eye out for.

Which films out of Fantastic Fest have you most excited? Let us know!
