Fans Tackle the Mystery of OVERWATCH’s Hidden Hero, Sombra

Longtime fans of Blizzard Entertainment are no strangers to cryptic messages and deciphering codes hidden within their games. The company begins dropping hints weeks before every Hearthstone expansion, which the community pores over like they’re trying to decipher the Rosetta Stone. However, with Overwatch, Blizzard has taken this carrot-dangling approach to a new level.

Overwatch’s maps have been praised for their use of environmental storytelling. From the mechanical guardians of Volskaya to the fictional movie posters in Hollywood, Overwatch hides a rich history beneath its zany, addictive gameplay. One of the best hidden pieces of environmental storytelling comes in the form of a mysterious character Sombra. Even before the game’s beta launched, players have been discovering hints about a so-called secret hero named Sombra, which means “Shadow” in both Potuguese and Spanish. How fitting.Sombra

Her name appears on many of the in-game computers, as well as in encrypted messages that the game designers have inserted into certain maps and videos. Based on all of this encrypted communication, many players have speculated that Sombra is a hacker, and in-game voice lines for Reaper reveal some connection between the two.

The most recent bit of fuel thrown on the speculatory fire comes in the form of yet another encrypted message, this time in the trailer for Overwatch’s Summer Games event.Overwatch Code

Luckily, we have fun new toys to play with while we wait. With the latest hero, Ana, coming out last month and the new Lúcioball mode on its way, there will be plenty to hold us over.

What do you think? Could this code finally tell us what Sombra’s deal is? Let us know in the comments below.
