Fan Made Music Video Brings X-MEN Characters Back to The ’80s

Back in the ‘80s, X-Men writer Chris Claremont seemed to enjoy putting mutant pop stars into his ongoing comics. Former Disco queen turned contemporary singer Alison Blaire a.k.a. Dazzler even joined the X-Men, while the lesser known Lila Cheney occasionally appeared alongside the New Mutants, a younger team of heroes who were also aligned with the X-Men.

Although Lila Cheney rarely appears in the modern Marvel Universe, Superhero Pop’s newest music video puts Lila front and center as she and Dazzler perform an original song. Singer Sage Montclair (who looks uncannily like Joan Jett) steps into the role of Lila Cheney while Gentry Roth portrays Dazzler.

It might be helpful to know that Lila Cheney’s mutant power is teleportation on an intergalactic scale. That means she could only teleport across the vast distances between galaxies, which she used to further her secondary career as a thief. Dazzler has the power to convert sound into light, which she also uses in this performance.

Additionally, the video includes the New Mutants themselves: Cannonball (Dennis Martin), Sunspot (Anthony Eftimeo), Mirage (Arianna Lemus), Karma (Mary Ly), Wolfsbane (Katie Hemming), Magma (Victoria Hallebo), Magik (Josephine Hies), Cypher (Eric Eberle), and Warlock (Cody Dowell) as they attempt to get by Strong Guy (Nate Moore) and watch Lila in concert. The video also plays upon the romance that unfolded between Cannonball and Lila in the comics when she snatches him in the middle of a song to help her steal a jewel several galaxies away!

Arvin Bautista wrote, directed, and edited the video in addition to providing the special effects and writing the lyrics for Lila’s song with music composed by Taiwo Heard. It’s a very charming and well-made production that really captures the spirit of the X-Men books of the era.
