This month, Fan Art Friday is all about highlighting the new characters in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Last week’s gallery focused on Rey, and this time we’re looking at the best pilot in the galaxy—Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac). Poe kicked off the story when he BB-8, his astromech and his pal, dropped in on Lor San Tekka on Jakku to pick up the map to a long lost Luke Skywalker. Besides being dashing and one hell of a pilot, Poe is exceptionally friendly to those around him; he calls everyone “buddy.”
He doesn’t necessarily have the most poetic of dialogue, but he doesn’t really need it. As leader of the Black Squadron, he had to give orders, not deliver thoughtful monologues. Poe’s importance to the Resistance was evident even before he fired the shots that blew up Starkiller Base. The Visual Dictionary for The Force Awakens states Poe left the New Republic’s defense fleet to join General Leia in the Resistance. Also, next time you watch the film, pay close attention to the shot that tracks his X-wing in the skies above Maz Kanata’s castle. It’s stunning.
