Express Every Emotion With 1,000-Key Emoji Keyboard

The concept of the emoji is a simple one: make expressing your emotions in an email or text as easy and brief as possible. They might not be a great idea for that school essay, but they play their role. Now, one brave man has not only asked, but answered, the question: “What if using emojis was totally impractical?”

Proving that no idea is too absurd if you really believe in it, inventor Tom Scott has created a fully functioning, real-life emoji keyboard. Using fourteen full-sized keyboards attached to a single laptop, and “more than a thousand individually placed stickers,” this teenage octopus’ dream set-up uses special software allowing each button to type a different emoji. You can even customize skin tones with this contraption, so the number of emojis available is truly massive.

Animals, transportation, sports, flags of the world, every known emoji is accounted for, as well as some that haven’t actually gone into use yet. (A levitating businessman? Someone tell me what that specific emoji will ever come in handy for. Or is Apple letting us know something about their next invention and we aren’t picking up on it?)

Scott himself calls this invention “kind of ridiculous,” and while having no pragmatic use, it certainly is impressive as an engineering feat. He also promises he’ll release a longer video to explain how he made it in greater detail.

So can we think of an actual reason to use this keyboard? ¯_(ツ)_/¯. Well, let’s try to see what we can come up with together in the comments below.
