“If it’s in a word or it’s in a book, you can’t get rid of The Babadook.” So goes the rhyme in the pop-up book that stirs up a lot of trouble in The Babadook, one of the best reviewed movies of the year, from writer/director Jennifer Kent. Now, after terrorizing poor Amelia (Essie Davis) and her son Samuel (Noah Wiseman), the mean old monster has gone a step further and stolen Christmas!
Much like The Grinch and Jack Skellington before him, Mister Babadook decided he was going to get in on the holiday action this year. He knows Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen, Comet and Cupid and Donner and Blitzen, and as you’ll soon recall, Mister Babadook made Santa take a big, nasty fall… Watch the holiday e-card below and be sure to pass it on to your friends.
The Babadook is the story of Amelia, a woman who struggles to discipline her “out of control” 6 year-old, Samuel, a son she finds impossible to love. Samuelâs dreams are plagued by a monster he believes is coming to kill them both. When a disturbing storybook called “The Babadook” turns up at their house, Samuel is convinced that the Babadook is the creature heâs been dreaming about. His hallucinations spiral out of control, he becomes more unpredictable and violent. Amelia, genuinely frightened by her sonâs behaviour, is forced to medicate him. But when Amelia begins to see glimpses of a sinister presence all around her, it slowly dawns on her that the thing Samuel has been warning her about may be real.
The Babadook, written and directed by Jennifer Kent, is in theaters and available on VOD now.
