Exclusive Look at BACK TO THE FUTURE Delorean Restoration Documentary

It’s one of the most iconic movie cars of all time, and one that, along with the Ghostbusters‘ Ecto-1 and the first Tim Burton Batmobile, cemented the ’80s as a decade of awesome sci-fi wheels. I’m speaking of course about Doc Brown’s modified DeLorean from the Back to the Future trilogy, cartoon, and now-defunct Universal Studios ride. When it was cherry, it was fitted with a one-of-a-kind flux capacitor, later upgraded thanks to Mr. Fusion, and a hover conversion for ease of off-road travel; just watch out for freak lightning storms. The decades have not been kind to this cinematic chariot, but one of the people responsible for the film series wants to change that, and has documented his findings in a new film.

Bob Gale, writer and producer of the movies, has made it a passion project to restore the DeLorean to its former time-traveling glory (though without time-traveling part, because of the fiction), which had been all but designated for scrap due to souvenir hunters, rats, and the fourth dimension itself. Gale has been dedicating his time to getting the car back in tip-top shape, as have dozens of fervent, intrepid fans, and filmmaker Steve Concotelli has decided to document this process in a new film called Out of Time, which is currently in the middle of an already-successful Kickstarter campaign.

The head of the restoration team is Joe Walser and he granted Concotelli unprecedented access to the rebuilding efforts which had the singular goal of recreating the car with 100% screen accuracy.

The project has already been funded, but there’s still plenty of time to kick in. But, even if you don’t, we still have a gallery below that will certainly be of interest. Pictures of before and after the restoration, as well as the first image, which is the first time anyone has seen a photo of the restoration process. Have a look at the time and effort it’s taken to restore the car I and probably millions of other kids wanted with all of their heart, soul, brain, and pancreas.
