Exclusive: DISNEY INFINITY 3.0 Darth Vader Concept Art

When Disney Infinity 3.0 launched at the end of last month, it expanded to include the galaxy far, far away. Star Wars characters became part of the game with figures and a “Twilight of the Republic” playset featuring Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano. Though exploring the prequel trilogy era with those characters is a blast, the next Disney Infinity 3.0 addition will jump ahead in the timeline to the original trilogy period. The “Rise Against the Empire” playset includes Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa and will be available on all platforms on September 29. New playable characters include Han Solo, Chewbacca, and Darth Vader. And speaking of the Sith Lord, we have an exclusive look at concept art:

Disney Infinity has a very specific, unifying style to ensure all the characters are similar despite being from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars universes. Jeff Bunker, vice president of art development for Avalanche Software, is responsible for “Infinitizing” characters, and he was incredibly excited about the chance to bring Darth Vader to the game. Though helmets and masks that cover the face can sometimes be restrictive, Bunker said that wasn’t the case with Darth Vader: “The nice thing about Darth Vader is he’s a one note character. He doesn’t express any remorse–in the very end he’s redeemed–but there wasn’t a lot of need for us to express much emotion other than power and control. That goes into his pose. We wanted to come up with an iconic pose that expresses who he was with a single statement; that’s why we went with the choke-hold.”

We learned from vice president of production John Vignocchi that Vader doesn’t run in the game in order to make sure he stays in character, and Bunker said that though were considerations to take into account from Lucasfilm, the process was very collaborative “We would make a version that we thought was appropriate for Infinity and we’d send that over to them, and we’d get notes back saying ‘Well, we understand that’s what you want to do for Infinity, but this is what’s important to the Star Wars brand.’ We just would go back and forth until we got it to a place until we were both happy.”

Will you be adding Darth Vader and the “Rise Against the Empire” set to your Disney Infinity 3.0 line-up? Let me know in the comments.
