When Nintendo’s NES came to America in 1985, it revolutionized the video game console landscape and led to the modern era of gaming. But at the time, 3D video games were a pipe dream. Now, 3D NES games are a reality.

Geod Studios has created a new emulator called 3DNES, which allows players to revisit a few classic Nintendo games with some added 3D effects. 3DNES is still in beta, but the early look at the revamped games is very tantalizing.

For example, the original Super Mario Bros. has not only been given 3D objects, it now has a first-person mode! But Super Mario Bros. was never designed as an open world title, and players can only run in a straight line. It’s a little disorienting, but the 3D effects really stand out in this game. Some of the bricks even seem like LEGOs as Mario travels through the level.

Geod Studios has also posted a much longer 3DNES demo video with clips from the newly enhanced versions of Castlevania, Contra, Zelda 2: The Adventures of Link, Mega Man, Super Mario Bros. 3, Legend of Ninja, and Dr. Mario.
