Two years after his four-season run on FXâs Wilfred, Elijah Wood is coming back to television this fall with a starring role in Dirk Gently, a new BBC America original series based upon the characters created by Douglas Adams. And this show may be even more bizarre than Wilfred!
Wood has been cast as Todd, a man who is definitely “not a sidekick” to the titular “holistic detective,” Dirk Gentlyâaccording to a press release. Adams wrote two Dirk Gently novels in the late ’80s that sent the title character and his friends on a “good detective-ghost-horror-who dunnit-time travel-romantic-musical-comedy-epic.” Adams was also well known for creating The Hitchhikerâs Guide To The Galaxy, and as a writer on three Doctor Who serials.
As described by BBC America, Woodâs character “always attempts to solve matters with the fewest steps possible; despite being a compassionate, sweet, smarter-than-average man with biting wit, Todd often finds himself at the intersection of morally gray crossroads. Thus, his bad habits of lying and stealing have dire consequences that he can’t put off forever, even though he tries. Todd’s not a bad person. He’s not a good person yet, either, but he’ll get there.”
Chronicle screenwriter Max Landis is creating the new Dirk Gently series, which is being produced by IDW, the publishers of the Dirk Gently comic book. Each season of the Dirk Gently TV show will focus on one mystery for Dirk and Todd to solve…eventually. The titular role of Dirk Gently has yet to be cast, but that will probably change very soon, as BBC America plans to debut Dirk Gently this fall.
