DOCTOR WHO Wins Big At the National Television Awards

Wednesday evening in the United Kingdom, the National Television Awards, a People’s Choice-style Emmy deal, awarded two of its most prestigious awards to Doctor Who. Well deserved, especially coming off of its astonishing 50th anniversary year. The people of Britain voted, and, it turns out, that stodgy old show about a weirdo in a police box is pretty popular with folks. Who’da thunk?

First, Matt Smith was awarded Best Drama Performance a second time for playing the Eleventh Doctor. He won in 2012 as well. While Matt himself was unable to attend the ceremony, owing to his West End commitment in the American Psycho musical, his costar Jenna Coleman and Doctor Who‘s lead writer and executive producer, Steven Moffat, were on hand to accept the honor on his behalf.

Shortly after learning of his win, Matt recorded a video on his phone to tell everyone how much he appreciated it.

And second, Doctor Who also took home the Best Drama award, beating out heavyweights Downton Abbey, Call the Midwife, and Broadchurch. Coleman was again called upon to accept the award and she thanked the fans thusly:

What a good evening for the program(me). Now, if it could just win those pesky BAFTAs, then the BBC wouldn’t cancel it. (It’s not going to get cancelled; I’m just making fun of naysayers who always say it will.)

What was your favorite Who episode this year? Should we take “The Day of the Doctor” off the table because it’s roundly considered amazing? Who knows? Who NOSE?

Every episode in season 7 has moments that I really love. But I can’t say that there is one episode that is my favorite. That is if you take off “Day of the Doctor.” I’ve watched “Day of the Doctor” many times now. I haven’t given any of the other episodes multiple viewings.

And justice is done.Congratulations to the cast and crew of Doctor Who for their NTA recognition.Glorious to see Matt Smith and Benedict Cumberbatch both rewarded for their performances this year, with best drama performance and best detective.Hail the Smith dog and The Moff!!

Although the Day Of The Doctor was awesome,i thought Matt was really outstanding in The Name Of The Doctor and Time Of The Doctor. The Daleks never had a chance.

  4. Mandy says:

I love Matt to pieces, but am I the only one who was massively underwhelmed by his last episode? It was just horrible, through no fault of Matt’s.
