With Steven Moffat‘s tenure as the creative force behind perennial television staple Doctor Who coming to a close at Christmas, it’s a good time to reflect on his run, spanning seven years and two Doctors (plus a War one), and just how much he actually tried to mix things up. You may recall, back with Series 7, each episode was treated like its own separate movie, and that more or less continued in Series 8. But with Capaldi’s first series, the episodes were also accompanied by amazing pop-art, Saul Bass-esque posters by the great artist Stuart Manning.
Seeing these posters was a big part of the excitement for the new episode each week (I even wrote up his great Series 8 ones at the time) Luckily for us fans, Manning continued making posters for each and every Capaldi-era episode. And now, Manning is having a sale via his Facebook where you can buy prints of these posters, for pretty darn cheap.
Let’s take a look at some of my favorites:
Series 9’s penultimate episode, “Heaven Sent,” is maybe one of the best episodes of all time, so of course it would have such a great and glorious poster.
I really love the starkness of this poster for Series 10’s “Thin Ice.”
And even though “The Return of Doctor Mysterio” wasn’t my favorite episode ever, this posterâwith its mix of art deco and jet-age iconographyâmakes it easily one of Manning’s best.
If you’re interested in more of Manning’s work, you can check out his Redbubble store, where you can also see a classic Who episode’s poster: 1973’s “The Green Death.”
