DOCTOR WHO Counts Down to Christmas with an Advent(ure) Calendar

The concept of the advent calendar has been around for over 100 years, and it hasn’t changed all that much in that time. The season of advent, which usually encompasses all of December, allows the excited to count down the days until Christmas. Well, the folks over at BBC 1’s website have been giving their own Doctor Who twist to the advent calendar, for several years now, in order to count down to the show’s Christmas Special each year. They call it the ADVENTure Calendar.

A traditional advent calendar would consist of a box, in some shape or form, with 24 sealed, numbered, windows on it. Each day in December, a child (or adult, let’s be honest) would open the corresponding numbered window and discover what is inside. Each day could contain a small toy, candy, a poem, a joke, or part of the story of the Nativity. Doctor Who’s ADVENTure Calendar takes the concept of one treat per day and has it pertain to the show and it’s upcoming Christmas episode. This year’s calendar is splitting time between hyping fans up for the Series 9 finale, “Hell Bent,” and this year’s Christmas Special, “The Husbands of River Song.”

The past four days have seen BBC offer wallpapers to download, videos, and photo galleries pertaining to “Hell Bent,” and the history of the series as it relates to the episode. Be sure to check back on BBC’s page each day for more goodies as we tick away the days until December 25.
