DOCTOR WHO and SHERLOCK Crossover…in Audio Form

Ever since Steven Moffat took over Doctor Who and co-created Sherlock in the same year, fans have been wondering if his two shows would ever intersect. Would Benedict Cumberbatch‘s Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman‘s John Watson have an adventure (likely ’round Christmastime) with Matt Smith or Peter Capaldi‘s Doctor? It’s been six years with nothing, so the possibility of a crossover doesn’t look good, but that doesn’t mean you can’t experience a version of it thanks to Big Finish Productions.

The purveyors of brand new, fully produced audio dramas of a number of famous British properties have decided to combine their Doctor Who and Sherlock Holmes ranges with a special release entitled “All-Consuming Fire.” The play is actually an adaptation of a Doctor Who New Adventures novel of the same name by Andy Lane. It depicts an adventure between the then-current Doctor, Sylvester McCoy’s Seventh Doctor, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s sleuth. McCoy himself voices the Doctor in the play, as he has done since the early days of Big Finish (which has used the Fifth, Sixth, Seventh, Eighth, and more recently added Fourth, War, and Tenth Doctors for years). Holmes is voiced by Big Finish’s co-executive producer (and TV voice of the Daleks and Cybermen) Nicholas Briggs.

The adaptation is by Guy Adams and the story concerns an ancient book stolen from the Library of St. John the Beheaded. Naturally, the Vatican turns to the world’s greatest detective, Sherlock Holmes, to determine the culprit. One of the suspects is shady and evasive and won’t give a straight answer… it’s the Doctor, of course, and soon the two great minds have to think together to stop an Old God from doing nefarious things.

“All-Consuming Fire” is available now for purchase on both CD and direct digital download via Big Finish’s website. It may not be Benny and P-Caps, but you can’t beat the next best thing!
