Disney’s Live-Action MULAN Gets a Release Date, and More Movie News

Did you dig Disney’s recent live-action Cinderella? Did The Jungle Book meet your expectations? Are you psyched for Beauty and the Beast? Good, because we’ve got word on the next adaptation of a Disney animated favorite, Mulan, in today’s Movie Morsels! Plus, The Shining returns to theaters, a deleted scene from X-Men: Apocalypse, and much more…

Mulan

Mulan

True confession time: I friggin’ adore Mulan. In fact, of all Disney’s post-Beauty and the Beast hand-drawn animated classics (with the possible exception of Hercules) it might be my favorite. The designs are gorgeous, the comedy crackles, and “Be a Man” is one of the most underrated of all Disney tunes. So with the record Disney’s been having of late with their animation-to-live-action adaptations, you can bet I’m over the moon to hear that Mulan has been put on the fast track with a release date of November 2, 2018. The film will open in 3D and a worldwide search for a Chinese actress to play the legendary folk hero Hua Mulan has just begun. The movie is described as an “elaborate adaptation, combining the legendary Chinese ballad and the 1998 animated film,” so it appears we’ll be getting the best of both worlds with this one.

X-Men: Apocalypse

The third Marvel mutant movie in the trilogy that began with X-Men: First Class, X-Men: Apocalypse arrives on Blu-ray and DVD this week. If you’re still undecided about whether or not to purchase the shiny silver disc, you might want to check out one of its bonus features, which just landed online. This one presents a scene that’s pretty historic within the X-Men universe: the moment when Cyclops receives the visor that inspires his name…

Jumanji

The fun, hijinks, and hilarity on the production of the Jumanji reboot continue with the latest photo from the film’s jungle set. Dwayne Johnson shares this pic of himself, Kevin Hart, and Jack Black.

“While on set,” explains Johnson, “one of us has a knack to break out in song at any moment [Jack Black], the other angrily eats Doritos and will tell you ‘go f*ck yourself’ if you stare too long [Kevin Hart] and the last one has convinced himself that popping his pecs triggers sexual pheromones to be released from women. And Komodo Dragons.”

Loving

Finally today… As someone who’s in an interracial marriage, I have to extend my deepest kudos to the folks behind Loving. The film presents the real-life tale of Richard and Mildred Loving (played by Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga), who took on the state of Virginia in a 1967 U.S. Supreme Court case that forever changed state laws criminalizing interracial marriage. To celebrate the film’s November 4th release, Focus Features has released a new series of emojis that help illustrate how, through yesterday, today, and forever, love is love. You can access these emojis via a new downloadable “Love-Moji” app now…
