Disney’s Bob Iger Confirms “Star Wars” Non-Saga Stand-Alone Movies

Okay, in case you missed it, here’s Disney CEO Bob Iger telling CNBC that there are indeed stand-alone Star Wars films “derived from great Star Wars characters that are not part of the overall saga.” Yes, we knew this was coming (and we didn’t hear Zack Snyder’s name today, though you’ve read that news before, too), but when the CEO says it, it’s news all over again. He said that Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg, already on board as consultants to J.J. Abrams for Chapter VII, are working on the other films, that will be separate from Chapters VII, VIII, and IX, which will be made as planned. He didn’t give any more details than that, but there it is, the boss confirming that there will be more separate spin-off features.

Which raises the spectre of a flood of Star Wars flicks that don’t follow the saga. This is a common thing in comic books, and you could look at the Marvel movies that led up to (and will follow) The Avengers in the same light — Iron Man, Captain America, et al. being separate from, yet complimentary to (and providing back story for) the main event. How, exactly, the new Star Wars non-saga flicks will fit into the canon is anybody’s guess, but we can speculate and propose which characters would be ripe for their own stories in the comments. No, I’m pretty sure Jar-Jar isn’t going to be starring in his own feature.

As far as the prequels are concerned, Disney ought to take notes from Plinkett’s reviews on redlettermedia. I agree with Manny, a motion picture about Revan would be fantastic. Maybe even a few films on the Mandalorian Wars. And although this may come off blasphemous, but get this – a reboot for the whole main saga: I’d love to see a reimagining of Star Wars. =)

Jedi Master Lenz Phlairs. Can’t wait.

  3. CJ says:

Bringing in Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg, after JJ Abrams was contractually obtained from Paramount Studios, is proof that the Walt Disney Co is allowing Kathleen Kennedy all that she needs to make sure LucasFilms can bring the best Films (& potential TV Series) possible … the rest will come down to Budget (& I still think hiring Kenneth Branagh to direct VIII or IX would be great!)

@andrew: You are a severely unhealthy person. Just move on. Give up your theater seat to someone with a better attitude.

  5. andrew says:

star wars is like the girlfriend who keeps cheating on you and treating you lousy yet you go back to despite your better judgement and the advice of your friends. then star trek tries to seduce you with its expansive universe and varied plot devices but you still stay with star wars because of star treks sickly sweet vibe. then firefly comes along and its something fresh and different with a touch of grit that star trek didnt have, but the romance is short lived. although you never forget about her, you assume she quickly forgets about you. then you go back to star wars as though she didnt wrong you over and over, and you feel gross about it but know you will go back yet again. the battlestar galactica comes along and sweeps you off your feet with her intensity and deep philosophical quandries and you end up having a much more deep and meaningful relationship than you ever had with star wars, but alas, something like BSG cant last forever and eventually circumstances make it so you must part ways. and there was dirty cheating disgusting fuckin star wars with that look in her eye like she knows youre powerless against her seduction. and here we all are waiting for it, wishing it was as good as it used to be back in the old days, but it wont be. and we will feel gross afterwards.

Man, when Topless Robot mentioned a Jar-Jar movie directed by Tommy Wiseau I actually fell on the floor laughing. That made my day.XD

  7. Nerdly Do Right says:

Ok, aren’t more new Star Wars movies by Disney better than NO new movies? That was Lucas’s plan…no more after the beating he took from the “fans”. If you are still hung up over your perceived notion that the prequals were inferior, then maybe you need to get on over it and find some other minutiae to rant about. More Star Wars good. So says Hulk, and he should know from bad versions of a story.

  8. huf2much says:

I’m with you RG, I love everything star wars. I did not find the prequels to be bad at all. And I love the expanded universe.
I think Disney is the best evil corporation to take on the franchise. They love big money and they have big money. When was there ever a non successful Disney film made? I just hope they don’t mess up any continuity within the EU.

  9. RG says:

Also, if you think it sucks being a Star Wars fan who was disappointed by the prequels… then imagine how much it sucks being one of my kind, a Star Wars fan who actually enjoys the whole saga for various reasons, and has to hear “the Star Wars prequels suck!” eeeevery siiiingle tiiiiime the words “Star Wars” come up.

It is INFURIATING, because non-fans don’t actually accomplish anything by spouting that negativity other than making people like myself feel bad.

  10. RG says:

Look, at this point, if you’re still saying you had your soul crushed by Episode I, you sincerely need to get… over… it. I’m gonna throw a number at you:

    Fourteen (Fuh-Fuh-Fuh-Fuh-Fourteen).

That is how many years it has been since Episode I. FOURTEEN… YEARS.

If it still pains you so badly that you can’t just enjoy what you enjoy of the Star Wars saga and leave the rest, then ya just gotta come to terms with the fact that it’s not FOR you anymore. You are not primed to enjoy whatever comes next, because you can’t really go into a movie literally “afraid” that it’s going to be bad and be able to judge it from a healthy perspective… it’s self-fulfilling prophecy.

  11. Everyone thinking we’re fucked with Disney, go look at The Avengers, STFU, and sit in the corner. Death will come soon.

  13. Kit in FL says:

To those afraid of Disney “fucking” this up… I have two words for you… Whedon/Avengers…

  14. Jake says:

Then CJ, you obviously have not had your soul crushed with episode I.

  15. CJ says:

I still don’t understand how people think “we” could be fucked or screwed in any possability with the creation of more Star Wars movies.

  16. Jessica L says:

I’m am placing all my hope in Disney. The fact that they had the presence of mind to hire the writers responsible for the two best star wars movies is a sign that they understand what fans want out of star wars.

All i want is more hard sci-fi and leia/han like romance and less space opera anakin/padme romance.

  17. Chris says:

I’m not saying were fucked yet. But I’m getting the lube ready. Just in case.

  18. Josh says:

    Phil, shut the eff up.

  19. Phil says:

    Soooo…we’re trusting Disney now?

  20. Manny says:

Darth Revan, it would be a sin if they didn’t
