Disney Will Stop Game Publishing, Discontinue DISNEY INFINITY

Well this is certainly huge for fans of collecting little figurines to go along with your video gaming. On Tuesday, John Blackburn, the SVP and GM for Disney Infinity, issued a statement that they would be discontinuing in-house game publishing and production of their massive gaming universe after completying the Alice Through the Looking Glass and Finding Dory sets.

This decision is not one reached lightly, but following a reported $147 million second quarter loss from an excess of unsold products driving the value of the Infinity assets down. Mashable has confirmed that as a result of this discontinuation, they will be shutting down Avalanche Software, the studio that created Infinity. The closure means that approximately 300 jobs will be cut. This is especially surprising considering there had been a confirmation of Pixar, Disney, and Star Wars-themed packs coming later in the year.

What this means in the long term is not that there won’t be Disney-themed games or characters in games, but it does mean that the company has decided it’s more lucrative to license their titles to other companies that can handle the production. Infinity had competition in the figurine-to-game field with the likes of the mega-popular LEGO Dimensions. Now that Infinity is shuttering, that opens up Disney, Marvel, and Lucasfilm properties to make their way into Dimensions, since they’ve already got dozens of LEGO toy products with those properties.
