Disney Reveals New AVATAR Ride Details

Sometimes, it’s easy to forget that James Cameron’s Avatar is still the highest grossing film of all time, and that Cameron is currently working on three sequels to open up the Avatar franchise. Disney has already announced plans to create an entire “land” built around Cameron’s Avatar at Disney’s Animal Kingdom in Orlando Florida, and at D23 Expo Japan, Disney finally revealed new details about its signature Avatar attraction.

The Avatar river ride will be called Na’vi River Journey, and it will take guests on a journey into one of  the bioluminescent forests on Pandora with animatronic creatures filling in for the CGI creations that appeared in the first Avatar movie. The beginning of the ride will put guests in canoes as they travel down a sacred river within the rainforest and witness the amazing plant life and animals that live there. At the end of the ride, the Na’vi shaman will arrive and give guests a musical send off as she “sends positive energy out into the forest through her music.”

As part of the reveal at D23 Expo Japan, Disney unveiled a new piece of concept art from Na’vi River Journey, which features a few of the Na’vi near the river along with the creatures that inhabit the previously hidden parts of the forest. Earlier this year, the Na’vi River Journey was described as “fluid, romantic, lyrical, and emotional” at D23 Expo. The new concept art definitely seems to be trying to evoke those feelings.

Pandora–The World of AVATAR will have additional attractions beyond the Na’vi River Journey when it opens at Disney’s Animal Kingdom in 2017.
