Are you ready to see how it’s all connected? Are you ready to explore the unknown that lurks just beyond the surface? Do you want to have some fun? Well, the new teaser from BBC America’s adaptation of Douglas Adams’Â Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency certainly plays into those questions and the unknown of it all with hopeful abandon. Debuting at San Diego Comic-Con (just now!), the Elijah Wood and Samuel Barnett-fronted seriesâwritten by Max Landisâlooks like it may be the network’s next big, fun, and exciting thing.
Declared a “thumping good detective-ghost-horror-who dunnit-time travel-romantic-musical-comedy-epic” by the author himself, Dirk Gently follows the eponymous Dirk (Barnett) as he investigates things which…don’t really seem like they need any investigating with his don’t-call-him-a-sidekick (but uh obviously he’s totally a sidekick), Todd (Wood). We don’t want to give too much away about the plot because it’s more fun to simply experience, but we will say this: it’s a very kooky, loopy good time in the same vein as Doctor Who, which makes sense because Adams worked on Who and the book itself has many similarities to several of the scripts that Adams worked on during his time on the show.
With Orphan Black ending next season and the fact that we’re not getting new Who for a while, it’s nice to see that BBC America’s still cooking up a lot of fun and inventive programming for us to sink our teeth into.
