Director Matt Reeves Offers Update on PLANET OF THE APES 3

Ever since Dawn of the Planet of the Apes turned out to be one of the best films of the summer, we have been eagerly awaiting any news about the inevitable sequel. In honor of the the Blu-ray/DVD home video release on December 2, 2014, the cast and crew have assembled on the Fox lot for a press day. Speaking to a group of assembled journalists, including our own Clarke Wolfe, director Matt Reeves sounded off on what we might be able to expect from the third film in the modern Planet of the Apes series:

“[We want] the story to be able to connect from the human to the ape world. So first one, [Rise of the Planet of the Apes] is this sort of how [Caesar] goes from humble beginnings to becoming a revolutionary. In Dawn, he rose to the occasion of becoming a leader, a great leader in really challenging difficult times. The notion of what we’re after in the third is continue that trajectory to how he becomes the seminal figure in ape history and almost becomes sort of like an ape Moses of sorts, a kind of mythic ascension. We’re trying to play out those themes and try to explore it in this universe of exploring human nature under the guise of apes.”

If we get to see Caesar parting the Red Sea in Apes 3, I will buy my body weight in IMAX tickets today. While the comparison may feel a bit hyperbolic, it does paint a nice picture of the sort of epic scope and arc we can expect for Caesar and company in the third film. Given that we never saw Koba’s body either, I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw a return from Toby Kebbell’s villainous bonobo too.

What would you like to see from Planet of the Apes 3? Let us know in the comments below.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is available on Blu-ray and DVD on December 2. Read our review here.

  1. Iris Rice says:

I would like to see the space ship Icarus crashing down on the domain and they are totally shocked when they realize what they’ve returned to.  I would also like to see the dumbing down of humans to the point where they can’t articulate, but can only grunt, and the apes lose their ability to grunt, and to articulate.  If Koba does return, I’d like for Blue Eyes to give him “what for.”  And I’d like to see Cesar accidentally run into Will, only to discover that he can’t communicate.  I wouldn’t mind seeing the 1968 remade with Andy Serkis and his crew

  2. James says:

Please use some of the music from the original soundtrack by Jerry Goldsmith ?? I think it was

  3. Joey Naham says:

I want to see more of the psychology focused on how Koba appeased the human guards with his contrived projected behavior. Overall I want to see the values of virtuism conquer the inorganic manipulation… Oh and bring Mark Wahlberg and Judy Greer, please and thank you.

  4. Kam Miller says:

With his first two Apes films, Reeves has pretty much earned the right to take Caesar just about anywhere. He could tell us the story of Caesar’s Vegas gambling addiction and I’d be there opening night.

  5. Chesterfield says:

    MONKEY! -I brought that in.

  6. Rob says:

Bring in Judy Greer’s lady ape! She was cut from Apes 2!

  7. Juan says:
