Designing the Capitol for THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY-PART 2

Chins up, smiles on–it’s time to go to the Capitol.

With the final installment of the Hunger Games movies, Mockingjay—Part 2, set to open November 20, fans of the dystopian novels will finally get to see the Capitol in all its horrible, booby-trapped grandeur. Francis Lawrence, who took over the director’s chair after the first film, gave an interview to Entertainment Weekly and talked about where the movie’s set designers found inspiration for the totalitarian government’s home.

While the previous three movies have involved scenes from the Capitol, this film is the first where the majority of the action takes place there, which required an actual design of the city for Katniss and her comrades to try and traverse to reach President Snow’s mansion. “It’s a mix up of a layout of Paris and old designs of Germania,” said Lawrence. Though inspired by Paris, it is doubtful Ms. Everdeen will be paying tribute at a café along the way.

For the design of the buildings, the film looked to a past oppressive government, so production designer Phillip Messina turned to Soviet-era buildings. “That architecture was evocative of dictatorial regimes,” he said, “It felt strong and monolithic, but also had a decorative element to it.” This description is an apt one, as scenes from the Capitol in the previous movies have been filled with massive, ornate buildings that are cold and imposing.
