DEFIANCE is the Latest MMO to Go Free-to-Play

A little over a year after Trion Worlds released it on the PC and consoles, MMO/shooter hybrid Defiance is going free-to-play on June 4th for the PC, according to the studio. For those subscribers who still want to pay into the game each month, there will be a non-recurring “Paradise Patron” subscription offering stat boosts and perks.

Before you start piling on, it was really more of “when” rather than “if” situation, as the market has seemed less and less capable of supporting subscription MMOs (and I’m betting we’ll be writing this same post for The Elder Scrolls Online come next spring).

Trion Worlds is timing the shift to the second season of the Defiance TV series on Syfy, which kicks off on June 19th, with the PS3 version of the game getting the F2P switch July 15th. Trion is currently in consultation with Microsoft about how and when it can go free-to-play on the Xbox 360.

Nope. I played it/play it. No subscription. You bought currency (which I did/do at times) to buy stuff. But no subscription.

  2. Girlfriendmd says:

We’ll know the subscription style MMO is dead when World of Warcraft finally goes with a free to play option.

Pretty sure Defiance had an optional subscription

It was never a subscription based game. It was b2p… you pay for the box, then you never paid again unless you want to. They’re just removing the box price. I sort of expected better of this site, in particular…
