DEATH STRANDING’s Bizarre Preview Raises More Questions Than Answers

Earlier this year, legendary game developer Hideo Kojima came to E3 without offering a new preview for Death Stranding, his first game since Metal Gear Solid V. Kojima saved the next footage from his highly anticipated title for his appearance at the Game Awards, and he delivered with an extended preview of Death Stranding that reintroduced Norman Reedus‘ main character. But if anyone was hoping for clarity about the game’s premise or setting, Death Stranding left everyone with an abundance of questions that don’t have any immediate answers.

One of the few concrete details we learned in the footage is that Reedus’ character is named Sam Porter, and he’s affiliated with the “United Cities of America.” The exact location of Sam and his crew isn’t mentioned, but given their specialized suits, we would say that it’s either on another world or a place on Earth that would be uninhabitable without their protection. But if it is so dangerous, why are they carrying around developing babies on their chests?

The preview does establish the immediate threat to Sam and the others in the form of nearly invisible creatures, whose footprints leave hand-like impressions in the ground. There was also a giant creature that looked more like a God than anything else. We could really use some context here, but even in his finished games, Kojima tends to enjoy leaving fans guessing.

Death Stranding will be released for the Playstation 4, but a release date has not yet been released.
