Did DEADPOOL Change the Future of the X-MEN Cinematic Universe?

In just over a month, Deadpool 2 will give fans another taste of its irreverent take on superheroes. But it’s going to be a long wait for the rest of the X-Men films. Earlier this week, X-Men: Dark Phoenix and New Mutants were pushed to 2019. Until fairly recently, both movies would have been released in 2018. What’s changed and how is it Deadpool‘s fault? Today’s Nerdist News is running through the Danger Room to bring you the answers.

Join guest host Amy “Alpha Flight” Vorpahl as she offers some perspective on the current state of the X-Men film universe. It’s probably not a coincidence both New Mutants and X-Men: Dark Phoenix are getting reshoots which led to their respective delays. If 20th Century Fox wants to make them into better movies, then we’re all in favor of it. But have Deadpool and Logan set the bar too high for the franchise that spawned them?

Not every superhero needs to go the R-rated route of Deadpool and Logan, which have completely different tones and stories. Their success wasn’t predicated upon their part in a cinematic universe; they were simply two very well-made movies which could be enjoyed without getting bogged down by continuity. The X-Men films already have a confusing timeline which wasn’t entirely fixed by X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Perhaps the solution is to simply ignore the past and focus on the present. New Mutants appears to be largely disconnected from the rest of the films, which will potentially make it easier to stand on its own. It would be much harder for Dark Phoenix to divorce itself from the rest of the X-Men movies. For better or worse, it has to embrace what came before and after it. Above everything else, we just want it to be good.

What do you think about the New Mutants and X-Men: Dark Phoenix delays? Let’s discuss in the comment section below!
