DC v Marvel: Who Will Win 2016?

As 2015 winds to a close and we all head to the theater to watch Star Wars: The Force Awakens for the 24th time, we see, in trailer form, the ultimate big-screen battle of 2016. Captain America: Civil War and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice are jockeying for fan attention at most cinema showings of Episode VII and it’s got us wondering: when it comes to wham-bang superhero cinema, who will win 2016?

Marvel‘s kicking off Phase III with a culmination (Captain America: Civil War) and the introduction of both a new hero and magical corner of the cinematic universe (Doctor Strange). DC is jumpstarting a whole cinematic universe of their own with some bold choices: an introduction to their super-team that starts with in-fighting (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice) and a dark, super-villain team-up flick that’ll introduce a whole rogue’s gallery before most of their super-heroic counterparts (Suicide Squad). Both wildly different approaches that get even further splintered when you consider Marvel‘s tight creative control and consistency alongside DC‘s wide-open, director-driven, arguably aimless vision. When it comes down to it, there is no clear winner…but Marvel may have an edge thanks to the impending emotional pay-off of Civil War. Then again, if DC figures out a way to roll their stellar TV slate into the multi-verse…
