Dave Grohl Named a “Special Performer” for the Oscars

How do I put this diplomatically…

People are not exactly thrilled with this year’s Academy Awards. There’s plenty of talk about boycotting the show, something I’m sure the Academy (and advertisers) are not exactly thrilled about. They might even find it “too alarming now to talk about” that. It’s almost like they need a “hero” to help rescue the show from itself.

Maybe that’s why they just announced Foo Fighters‘ lead man Dave Grohl will be a special performer.

Besides naming Grohl as a performer, they also listed some presenters, with John Legend and Morgan Freeman standing out in lieu of the controversy surrounding the nominations and potential boycott.

Okay, so there’s not a lot to go on about Grohl’s role on the show. He’s going to “perform.” Well in the absence of hard facts let’s just speculate and see what we come up with.

There’s the easy guess, which is that he will perform one (or heck all) of the nominees for Best Original song. Those are:

  • “Earned It” (Fifty Shades of Grey)
  • “Manta Ray” (Racing Extinction)
  • “Simple Song # 3” (Youth)
  • “Til It Happens to You” (The Hunting Ground)
  • “Writings on the Wall” (Spectre)

However, something else jumps out, which is whether Grohl might be part of a tribute to David Bowie. Bowie was honored at the Grammy’s in a performance by Lady Gaga, but Bowie was also an actor with some beloved films to his credit. Could Grohl possibly be a part of something that pays homage to Bowie’s music and acting career? Grohl already did it once.

My own personal dream is that Grohl’s “performance” is just him calling out Wiz Khalifa to perform “See You Again” from Furious 7, the best damn song from any movie last year.

Oh, and I also insist that Grohl is dressed like the most important musician from all of cinema in 2015.  And he uses the exact same guitar.
