DARK SOULS 3’s Story Revealed in Opening Cinematic

With Dark Souls III potentially marking the end (or a drastic turning point) of From Software’s famous series, we’ve been eagerly awaiting more plot-related information from the developer. So far, we know that it involves defeating the massive “Lords of Cinder,” and that you’ll be revived as an“Unkindled” in the “Untended Graves” at the beginning of the game. With the game’s April 12th release date looming like a lightning skeleton, the folks at Bandai Namco have given us an even closer look at what’s to come in the third entry with its opening cinematic. Check it out above.

The video showcases Lothric, which the narrator describes as the place “where the transitory lands of the Lord of Cinder converge.” The gothic setting will bring players face to face with menacing enemies like Yhorm the Giant, Aldrich Saint of the Deep, Farron’s Undead Legion and more. Similar to previous promotional images and clips, the cinematic features ash which, according to remarks the developer has made in the past, plays an integral part in Dark Souls III.

The trailer’s final lines, “Only in truth, the lords will abandon their thrones, and the Unkindled will rise. Nameless, accursed undead, unfit even to be Cinder. And so it is, that ash seeketh embers,” are reminiscent of the plight that the Undead faced in Dark Souls 1 and Dark Souls 2. With the Firelink Shrine mentioned several times, it will be interesting to see how all three titles are tied together.

For an in-depth look at some of the new combat, don’t forget to check out our hands-on impressions piece. For everything else Dark Souls 3 related, stay tuned.
