Dark Horse Reveals Never-Before-Seen Mike Mignola Cover Art (Exclusive)

Mike Mignola is taking a break from illustrating comics for at least a year, to focus on his painting. But the creator of Hellboy isn’t done writing comics! Now, Dark Horse has revealed that Mignola and Christopher Golden‘s Baltimore will be back in 2017 with a new miniseries, which will also bring their shared saga to an end.

Since 2007, Mignola and Golden have chronicled the adventures of Lord Henry Baltimore in an alternate world that was overrun by monsters in the wake of the first World War. After ten years, Baltimore’s story will come to an end in Baltimore: The Red Kingdom, a new miniseries written by Mignola and Gordon, with art by Peter Bergting. Ben Stenbeck will be the cover artist of the five-issue miniseries, which will be collected as a hardcover edition later in 2017. Below, we’ve got Mignola’s ominous cover for that collected edition.

“Lord Baltimore has lived a hellish life ever since the night he led an ill-fated mission across a World War 1 battlefield,” Golden told Nerdist. “He lost his wife and his family, essentially everyone who’d ever loved him, and he set out on a quest for vengeance that led him to reluctantly embrace a larger destiny. He’s always felt damned, always felt like he was marching toward his own doom, but in Baltimore: The Red Kingdom, all of the threads of his destiny come together. There’s always been a bit of opera in this series, and The Red Kingdom is the final act. The curtain is coming down.”

Baltimore: The Red Kingdom #1 will hit comic book stores on Wednesday, February 1, 2017, and we’ve been told that at the beginning of the series, Lord Baltimore will be MIA, while his team has been disbanded. But the final battle against their enemy looms ahead, and it will determine the fate of their world.

Dark Horse also provided two exclusive pieces of artwork from Mignola’s Hellboy. The first image is the cover of the upcoming Hellboy and the BPRD 1954 trade paperback.
