Dark Horse Announces LEGEND OF KORRA Comic Book

And the cheers from the Korra fandom grew louder this day!

Dark Horse just announced a brand new The Legend of Korra comic series written by co-creator Michael DiMartino, while co-creator Bryan Konietzko will consult on art direction. Details are still few and far between, given the early stages of development, but the announcement GIF (below) from Dark Horse points to a very Korrasami-focused storyline.

The final scene of Book 4 saw Korra (voiced by Janet Varney) and Asami (Seychelle Gabriel) walking hand in hand into the Spirit World, and we can see them above stepping back out into Republic City. It was a major moment for fans when the two decided to embark on both a Spirit World journey and a romantic relationship after an intense resolution in quelling the threat of would-be dictator Kuvira (Zelda Williams).

Both Korra and Asami had dated another fan-favorite character, Mako (David Faustino) at different times in the series previous three seasons, but eventually a true and respectful love bloomed between the two badass ladies. Despite cries from the Makorra shippers, the canonization of Korrasami was and remains a huge moment in animated storytelling.

Comic book adaptations of Avatar: The Last Airbender had some important plot points from the television series (like the fate of Zuko and Azula’s mother) expounded upon and resolved. The Korra comic series will likely delve into new territory that fans will enjoy, but largely much of the television series’ loose ends were neatly tied up in the final season. It’s possible that the relationship between the Beifong family will be explored, though that’s purely speculation. We’ll know more when the comic series, which is planned to be collected into three separate graphic novels, is nearer to launch day.

Speaking of Beifongs, an awesome new Statue of Republic City Police Chief Lin Beifong will be available later this year, and an exclusive variant is available at Comic-Con this week!

Regardless of speculative plot points, it will be nice to see Avatar Korra embark on new adventures now that she’s a fully realized and balanced bridge between the Spirit World and physical world, especially since she was responsible for bending the energy from a super weapon into an entirely new Spirit portal. That’s kind of a big deal.

With creators Konietzko and DiMartino both embarking on brand new literary ventures, it’s most welcome news indeed that the two will still be involved in the world of bending!
