Danny Boyle might be busy promoting his new film, Steve Jobs, but he’s got an exciting update to share about a future project: the highly-anticipated sequel to his 1996 hit, Trainspotting. He dropped into HuffPost Live to give a few deets, and this is what went down.
Boyle tells host Caroline Modarressy-Tehrani, “We’re going to do a sequel, and we’ve got a script by John Hodge [who wrote the first film and was nominated for an Academy Award], which is very good, actually, and we wouldn’t have gotten the four actors back if it hadn’t been, because they’re all very nervous about disappointing people.” He says that he’s confident in the material, and the film will begin shooting in the middle of next year.
He further elaborated, “It feels like we’re going back to it with a kind of understanding of what we’re doing, and it’s not some cheap cash-in that you could have done after it was initially a success. It feels like it’s going to be about something, which is — I’m afraid it doesn’t sound that sexy — it’s the passing of time, really, and what it does to friendship.”
Trainspotting was a major success, portraying the harsh reality of drug addiction as the world had never seen before. This gritty kind of realism is always welcomed in the cinema – yet we don’t see nearly enough of it. Unsurprisingly, the film has had lasting impact on popular culture in the 20 years since its release. We’re geared up for round 2, that’s for sure.
