Dan Harmon Is Producing a Movie About Michael Jackson’s Chimp

Hollywood may have finally come up with a way to do an unauthorized big screen story about Michael Jackson. Community creator and Rick and Morty co-creator Dan Harmon is producing Bubbles, a stop-motion animated story about the chimpanzee who was Jackson’s pet and companion for nearly two decades.

Bubbles was written by Isaac Adamson and it was placed on Hollywood’s annual Black List of the most liked unproduced screenplays. According to the report that originated at Deadline, Bubbles takes place from the point of view of Bubbles himself as he tells Jackson’s story from the time he adopted Bubbles in 1983 to 2003, when Jackson was forced to give up Bubbles and send him away.

The real Bubbles was said to have become overly aggressive when he reached adulthood, which is common among chimpanzees. They’re not really meant to be pets, but Jackson treated Bubbles like he was a child and took him on tour around the world. Jackson’s relationship with Bubbles fueled the media’s portrayal of Jackson as a weird eccentric who was trying to recapture his childhood. Bubbles is reportedly still living in an animal sanctuary in Florida.

Andrew Kortschak and End Cue picked up the Bubbles film, and it will be produced through Harmon’s Starburns Industries. This isn’t Harmon’s first animated feature, as he produced the Academy Award-nominated Anomalisa last year.
